What is vitamin D3?

Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble form of vitamin D – when you produce this naturally, it's called cholecalciferol. We produce vitamin D3 in our skin when exposed to adequate ultraviolet light from the sun. However, our modern lifestyles, which tend to keep us indoors, are depriving us of the sunshine we need. Unfortunately, even the foods we eat rarely contain enough Vitamin D3 - if any at all!

Who needs Vitamin D?

The symptoms of a Vitamin D3 deficiency includes fatigue, hair loss, back and muscle pain, and even depression can be symptoms of a lack of Vitamin D3. More than one billion people worldwide are estimated to be deficient in Vitamin D3.

Due to our changing diets and ever-increasing internal lifestyles, everyone should look to ensure they maintain healthy vitamin D levels throughout the year.

However, the Department of Health outlines the following groups as “at-risk” and should strongly consider supplementation:

All pregnant and breastfeeding women
Infants and young children under 5 years of age
Older people aged 65 years and over

People who have low or no exposure to the sun
People who have darker skin

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

Take one-five capsules per day or as directed by your healthcare professional.

Do not exceed the recommended daily intake/dose

Bulking Agent: Olive Oil, Capsule Shell: Bovine Gelatine, Humectant: Glycerol, Purified Water, Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol)

Adults, including pregnant and breastfeeding women and the elderly, and children aged 11 to 17 years should not take more than 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) of vitamin D a day as it could be harmful. Any levels above this recommended level should be under Medical Supervision

Keep out of sight and reach of children
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose
Prolonged use of Vitamin D over an excessive period can cause a high level of calcium to be retained in the body (hypercalcaemia), which can weaken bones and damage the kidneys and heart
Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are breast feeding, pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are taking prescribed medicines
Store in a cool dry place

Do not take Colecalciferol:

If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Colecalciferol or any of the other ingredients in the capsules
If you have high levels of calcium in your blood (hypercalcaemia) or urine (hypercalciuria)
If you suffer from pseudohypoparathyroidism (disorder of the parathyroid hormone balance)
If you suffer from severe renal impairment If you have kidney stones (renal calculi)
If you have high levels of vitamin D in your blood (hypervitaminosis D) If you already take other medicines containing vitamin D (e.g. multivitamin preparations)

Warnings and precautions talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Colecalciferol:

If you suffer from heart disease or narrowing of the arteries
If you suffer from sarcoidosis (a multisystem chronic inflammatory condition which can affect your lungs, heart and kidneys), then there is a risk of increased conversion of vitamin D into its active form
If you are taking medicines containing vitamin D, or eating foods or drinking milk enriched with vitamin D

If your renal function is impaired
If you have a tendency to form calcium containing renal calculi
If you need additional calcium supplementation. Calcium supplements should be given only under close medical supervision
